The Hunt: Five Things to Look for in a New Apartment

Five Things to Look for in a New Apartment with The Grove at Swift Creek

I’ve lived in the same apartment for more than three years.  I landed there after my last apartment management company asked us to leave so they could renovate. I had a very short time frame to look for an apartment then. Fortunately, I truly found a gem. Anyone that knows me knows I love my downtown loft style unit. I love it even more now that my roommate has moved in and my freelance business has grown.

My lease ends this summer, though, and we both agreed it’s time to move on. We’re looking for a fresh start in a new place. This time, I have a little more time to really think about what I want. A visit to The Grove at Swift Creek apartments last week had me thinking deeply about characteristics I seek from an apartment.  I’ve put together a list of those attributes for you in case you’re on the hunt for your next apartment, too:

Opportunity for Community

Community is important to me for many reasons.  As a journalist at heart, I genuinely love getting to know new people and hearing their stories.  Secondly, I rely on making connections professionally. Opportunity to bump into new people is essential for me! The clubhouse at the entrance of The Grove at Swift Creek has a Starbuck’s coffee nook, a business area, a pool, and a gym—all of which are great for connecting. There are outdoor kitchen and cooking areas—perfect for when I want to host a few friends.   In addition, The Grove hosts events throughout the year, like wine nights, outdoor movie nights, pool parties, and more.

Easy Access to Dining + More

Let’s talk about the steak tacos at Sedona Taphouse. Okay, let’s not. I’m drooling now. Around the corner from Swift Creek is Westchester Commons, which is packed with restaurants like the new Shaved DuckLatitude, and Plaza Azteca. Not to mention, T.J. Maxx and Target. Wherever I’m moving, I need access to good food, creative gathering spots, and one-stop-shop retailers. I want to be able to say “Yes!” to a quick dinner or run to the store to grab something I need in a pinch.

Fitness and Outdoor Activities

If I have to drive more than 10 minutes to a studio, I’m not going to make it for the workout. That’s just how my mind works. I’m busy and I hate spending more time in my car than I have to. Having access to a gym or studio I can walk to is essential for me. The Grove has a state-of-the-art fitness center on site, with cardio machines, universal machines, free-weights and more.

I also love to spend time outside.  I need a porch, a patio, a yard, or all of the above!  The Grove has all these things, plus tennis courts and a walking trail for outdoor enjoyment. I want to ride my bike more.  They Grove has a new Cycle Hub where you can store your bike year-round.

The Right Layout

I’ve lived with a husband and a dog. I’ve lived alone. I’ve lived with a partner and his growing son and music collection. I’ve been living with another female for the past years. I know how and how not to make a house a home. I know how to be productive and not to go crazy. At 31, I also have a few quirks and enjoy my space.  I know I’ll need a list of amenities and characteristics at my new apartment. That includes my own bathroom, room for a queen bed, an open kitchen, and opportunities for privacy. Walking around The Grove at Swift Creek, all of these boxes were checked.
