Five Places to Eat Healthy in Richmond, VA

A Google search for “healthy food in Richmond VA” will get you hundreds of results all across the city. We’re breaking down our top 5 favorite places to grab a healthy bite and telling you why we love them so much.

North End Juice Company

Juice and smoothie bars are popping up left and right in the city, and we are here for it. We love North End for their variety: they offer a wide selection of juices, smoothies and smoothie bowls, as well as food you can sink your teeth into like poke bowls, salads, wraps and flat breads. And did we mention their ice cream? North End Market on Cleveland Street in the Museum District sells grab and go versions of their prepared foods and ice cream! They have a rotating selection of flavors that often include dairy-free and vegan options.

Ellwood Thompson’s

This grocery store and café located in Carytown is the solution to all of your food problems. Need to pick up a quick dinner for the family – visit the hot bar. Need a quick meal during the work day – head to the Beet Café. Need one more ingredient to help you make dinner tonight – stop in to the grocery store. Seriously, Ellwood Thompson’s place has everything! The Beet Café offers made to order breakfast, lunch and dinner options, the store has a hot and cold food bar open from 7am-10pm, and there is a full coffee and juice bar – all inside of a grocery store! And you know when you go to Ellwood’s you’re going to come out with quality food. They only source the freshest, organic ingredients and products.

Ipanema Café

We love a Richmond staple, and Ipanema Café is just that. It’s been serving up vegan and vegetarian dishes on Grace Street near VCU for 20 years now! They offer a vegetable-focused menu for lunch and dinner and also boast an extensive wine, beer, and dessert menu. Ipanema’s front patio is also home to some of the best people-watching in the city. Nothing beats taking in all the sights of the city as you chow down on a BBQ jackfruit sandwich.

Union Market

We may be a little biased as Union Market is right around the corner from Boho’s offices, but there are so many reasons to love Union Market we’re confident it deserves a top spot in our countdown. The market side offers a wide selection of healthy food products like protein bars, healthy chips, kombucha, and wellness shots. The café side offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with a variety of options – we’re partial to their salads and vegetable-based sides! The thing we love about Union Market is that there’s something for everyone – even if you have family and friends who may not be on the health-food train, they can order up a hearty sandwich with extra delicious meats and cheeses. Union Market also offers a bar with wine, beer, and cider on tap!

The Daily Kitchen & Bar

Need a date-spot with healthy options – look no farther than the Daily Kitchen & Bar in Carytown. Arguably the best menu in town for those with special diets and food sensitivities, the Daily has specifications for Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten-Free, and Paleo meals. They have everything from pizza to salads and tacos to turkey burgers. We’re a huge fan of their “Simply Prepared” menu which offers a number of various proteins cooked in olive oil and served along side asparagus and quinoa. They also have an impressive drink menu including wine, beer, mocktails, and kombucha cocktails.
