Updating your Favorite Little Black Dress

Updating your Favorite Little Black Dress

I’m getting ready for several weddings this year. I’m looking at my collection of little black dresses to help. The LBD has been a fashion staple for decades. A reliable and comfortable black dress can be worn on almost any occasion, from running errands to cocktail hour to everything in between.

After several seasons of wear, a little black dress can begin to feel boring, too simple, and too predictable. There are many creative ways to update the presentation of a little black dress, rejuvenating its overall style and practicality to make it stand out as the definitive year-round garment it is.

Jewelry

Statement jewelry pieces like chandelier earrings and colorful necklaces can elevate a plain black dress. A singular piece of statement jewelry can define the formal or casual nature of your look. A colorful piece of jewelry can radiate fun, while a piece with clear and glittering jewels can exude elegance.

Color

Adding color to the little black dress is a simple and effective way to alter its visual impact. Accessorizing with shoes, handbags, hair accessories, and scarves can keep a little black dress looking fresh. Introducing a singular colorful element into your LBD-centered outfit ups the presentation options. Less is more, though.

Outerwear

I love a good blazer and jacket. One of the most beloved traits of a little black dress is that the neutral unadorned garment can go with literally anything. Wearing colorful or texturally interesting coats, jackets, and sweaters can make the same little black dress look and feel like many different outfits. Try a jewel-tone duster coat over a mid-thigh or knee-length black dress. A flannel overshirt tied at the waist over the same black dress injects some 90s vibes. A leather moto jacket in any color adds some edge.

Legwear

Legwear can also transform a little black dress. The textural interest of lace, fishnet, or Swiss dot tights and hosiery can update and polish any look. It’s also a great way to wear a dress idiot the cooler months or late nights. For something a little sexier, thigh high stockings held up by a garter belt can do the trick.

Faux Fur

The contrast between a simple black dress and highly textured faux fur pieces is one of my favorites. You can conjure up a fun old Hollywood vibe and staying warm. Interchangeable and removable collars are also. great way to add in this texture and benefit. It still a classic move, either way.

Metals

Metallic pieces catch the light and shine their best when paired with a little black dress. Gold, rose gold, copper, and silver pieces can all be paired for different effects. I’m really looking at metallic waist belts that cinch the waist and polish off a look. Choosing a metal tone that compliments your skin tone can also prevent the stark black dress from washing you out too dramatically.

The little black dress is the ultimate chameleon in anyone’s wardrobe. One day it can exude an erudite vibe, the next day a sharp dark edge, and after that a polished professional. Knowing how to work the potential of a black dress will keep you’re closet and wallet happy.
